As long as you know the type of client you are after you will be able to cultivate a book of business that will bring in regular monthly income that is predictable. You will learn to find a balance between the various types of clients.
Everyone (including my spouse) thinks I’m crazy. How can I get family on board with my IT consulting practice?
Most people are conditioned to find security in a full time job because it is predictable. However that is a misnomer. When you work at a full time position that is a single point of failure in your employment career. Your boss and you might not get along. They may have layoffs. There are numerous reasons why you could lose your job. Creating and running your own IT business you will have numerous clients. It is kind of like a mutual fund where the fund has numerous company stocks. If one of the companies does poorly you don’t lose all your money. The same goes with IT consulting business. When you have numerous clients you can bill a little every month to a number of clients. The total billing can exceed the income of a full time position. Then if you lose a client or two it is not devastating because you have other clients to work for. Then you replace the clients you lost. So with that said explain this to your spouse. Then prove it! Find numerous clients and when your income begins to equal or exceed your full time position you can make the decision to go full time in your IT consulting practice.
